The Thompson Lions Club presented a new bicycle rack to the Winnebago County Fair this July for people of all ages to use. The Club wanted to give bike riders a place to securely park their bicycles without having to lay them on the ground, where they could present a tripping hazard. The donation provides bike riders like Kinzie Haugebak, pictured, and other fairgoers with a safer experience at the fairgrounds.

As Iowa faces growing demand for long-term care services and a need for more caregivers, the Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA) Foundation last week awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships to 32 Iowans preparing for and advancing their careers in long-term care. Recipients include current long-term care professionals, high school seniors planning to enter the field and individuals from rural Iowa communities.

Everyone is invited to the Hanson Nature Center on Sunday, Aug. 16, for a presentation by the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. and last about an hour. 

The last big celebration of the summer in Winnebago County is this weekend in Buffalo Center, with the annual Bison Days hosted by North Iowa Betterment.

The celebration kicked off early on Thursday, with Old Fire Liquor hosting a food truck and bags tournament in the evening to support the Dalton Cooper Memorial.

Buffalo Center’s mayor wants to see traffic slow down coming into town on Highway 9, but the State of Iowa has control over the speed limit. The City Council discussed the topic at its monthly meeting on July 13.

Iowa Lakes Community College proudly recognizes the academic excellence and dedication of students who earned placement on the Spring 2026 President's List and Dean's List.

Water Matters, a public forum addressing Iowa’s water quality issues, is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the ISU Northern Research Farm, 310 South Main Street, in Kanawha. This forum is one of the Rural Revival: Local Voices, Common Goals public forums, a series of forums created to explore key issues central to our communities’ futures.

Briona Ricke of Titonka is among 1,300 students named to the High Honor list at Minnesota State University, Mankato for the spring 2026 semester. To qualify for the High Honor list, students must achieve a 4.0 straight “A” average while enrolled for at least 12 credit hours for the semester.

Upper Iowa University has announced the Dean's List for the 2026 Spring Semester. To be honored, a student must have earned a minimum 3.50 grade point average and be enrolled as a full-time student.

Local students making the list include Ashley Hoffman of Lake Mills, Madison Arispe of Forest City, and Joslynne Plath of Forest City.

The Forest City Council on Monday discussed a draft resolution and a 28E agreement with Forest City Economic Development.

Throughout the month of August, all dollars donated to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank will be doubled, up to $20,000. This special challenge match is funded by several north Iowa businesses, professional firms, and individuals who are friends of the food bank.
