Smith wins second place at EntreFEST Pitch Competition

Zack Smith of Lake Mills won second place at the 2026 EntreFEST Pitch Competition held June 12 in Iowa City. The EntreFEST Pitch Competition brought together community leaders, founders, investors, and supporters to hear from five entrepreneurs as they competed for $15,000 in prize funding.

Public trap shooting at Florence Recreation Area

The Winnebago County Conservation Board will host public trap shooting this summer at the Florence Trap Shooting Range. The range is located at 42435 60th Ave., just south of Highway 9 between Thompson and Buffalo Center.

Three area students on BVU Dean’s List

Buena Vista University congratulates more than 520 students who were named to the Spring 2026 Dean's List. The Dean's List recognizes full-time students achieving a 3.5 grade point average or higher for the semester.

Students from Winnebago County making the Dean’s List include Brandy Albrecht and Livia Hofbauer of Buffalo Center, as well as Skylar Steffensen from Forest City.

Hello from Timely Mission! It was a very nice week to be outside between rain showers.

Monday coffee social was a nice turn out. In the afternoon, some of our regulars played Farkle dice. At residents’ council, we chose new president Kevin Stecker and vice president Denny Yegge!

Post-election audit confirms election night results

Winnebago County officials conducted a required post-election audit on Thursday, June 11, for the June 2 Primary Election. According to the Winnebago County Auditor’s Office, the audit confirmed a perfect match between the hand count and the election night results from the voting machines. 

Free community meal at Buffalo Center Farmers Market

The summer farmers market is underway in Buffalo Center each Tuesday afternoon from 4-6 p.m. at Post Office Park. North Iowa Betterment will add something special to the event this year, with a free community meal once a month.

Rotary livens up Clark Park with 100th anniversary mural

Clark Park in Forest City has a fresh splash of color, thanks to a new mural commissioned by the Forest City Rotary Club as part of their 100th anniversary celebration. The prairie-themed mural covers the previously gray north wall of the Cooper Building, which is located on the south end of the park and is owned by the Forest City Community School District.

Bridge-ing the gap – card group brings generations together

Bridge is a game that can take a lifetime to master, and for the Thursday bridge group at the Forest City Senior Center, the game is bringing multiple generations together.

A group of five ladies meets each Thursday afternoon to play a few games of bridge while enjoying snacks and conversation, and they recently realized they were all born in different decades.

The first Lake Mills Farmers Market of the season opened Monday, June 15, under perfect conditions – sunny skies and a comfortable 77 degrees. The lot west of City Hall filled with the kind of homegrown hustle and bustle that signals summer has arrived. From 4 to 6 p.m. at 200 N. 1st Ave.

B.C. Council talks Bison Days mural, street project

North Iowa Betterment is looking for ways to incorporate America’s 250th birthday celebration with Bison Days this July. Mariel Wolsing, Executive Director at NIB, spoke to the Buffalo Center City Council at their June 8 meeting about an idea for a new patriotic mural that could adorn a public building.

South Dakota State announces spring 2026 Dean's List

Four students from Winnebago County are among more than 3,900 students recognized for outstanding academic performance at South Dakota State University by being named to the spring 2026 Dean’s List.

To earn dean's list distinctions in SDSU's colleges, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits and must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Hofbauer graduates from Buena Vista University

Livia Hofbauer of Buffalo Center graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Buena Vista University in Spring 2026. Hofbauer was among more than 445 students who received degrees.

Community Chapel VBS supports Samaritan’s Purse

Nearly 60 kids enjoyed a fun week at Community Chapel in Lakota during their annual Vacation Bible School, held June 1-5. Fifty-nine kids signed up, with a maximum single day attendance of 56.

Summer blood drive at Immanuel on June 29

The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donors, and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City will host a Red Cross blood drive on Monday, June 29. The drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Immanuel Lutheran Church, located at 246 S. Clark St. in Forest City.

NIACC announces spring honors lists

North Iowa Area Community College is pleased to announce that 1,146 individuals have been named to the 2026 Spring Term President’s List and Dean’s List. These students represent 104 Iowa communities, 15 states outside the state of Iowa, and 18 countries outside of the United States.
